Report Text - Dugong

The word “dugong” comes from Tagalog word which adopted from Malay “duyung”. “Duyung“means lady of sea, or in some area it called by “sea cow”, “sea pig”, and “sea camel”. Dugong is a large marine mammal, it is include in Dugongidae family. Dugong is the only marine herbivorous mammal. It lives in warm coastal water from the western Pacific Ocean to the eastern coast of Africa and its population exist in the water of 37 countries and territories. Dugong has been hunted for thousands years for its meat and oil.

 Dugong has large body with cylindrical shape and its skin is thick and smooth. The colour of a dugong can change through the growth of algae on its skin. Dugong do not has nails on its flippers which are only 15% of a dugong’s body length, its tail has deep notches. Dugong’s brain weighs just 300 g (11 oz.). Dugong has very small eyes, so it has limited vision. Its ears located on the side of the head. The nostrils are located on top of head. Dugong’s length is about 3 meters (9.8 ft.) when it an adult and its weigh around 420 kilograms (926 lb.). source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dugong
